The Miseducation of the Doodle

“The Miseducation of the Doodle” resonated with me the most because I felt as if I learned more new things from this article than “Sketching: The Visual Thinking Power Tool”. The article discussed how doodling is more than just little drawings on paper, it’s something that helps people think. I’ve never thought about doodling as more than mindless drawing on the side of a page, but this article shows that there is so much more to it. When thinking of how one learns: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic, it makes sense that doodling can help one learn/think. This article made me think back on how I used to doodle back in high school and freshmen year and how I haven’t done much of it since. Now, I feel as if I never know what to draw and I get stuck on trying to figure out what to do. Doodling should be more free flowing and not mindless, but carefree and going where my mind goes. I consider myself a more visual learner, thus, doodling should be an effective way of learning. I already make color coordinated notes so strategic doodling should make those notes more effective.

This article also talked about how one should group doodle and have it not be a solitary activity. Drawing wasn’t and isn’t much of a collaborative activity for me besides doing the same activity in the same space. I never think about turning text into visuals even though I spend so much time doing graphic design. It only makes sense that I should incorporate doodles into my everyday life to help me generate new ideas and think. This article is so closely related to the one about sketching that you never know when a doodle can be the next big thing. I can’t place why I stopped doodling but this article made me think again about doodling more in class or work.
